A common question we get, are the rain showers enough to water my garden?
It’s a tough question to answer, we all know the Hot South Florida summers bring the, almost daily, afternoon showers, humidity and thunderstorms. It’s common to get a heavy downpour for 30 minutes and that may not be enough to water your garden sufficiently, We find that underwatering is one the most common reasons for plants perishing, the water simply isn’t reaching deep enough into the soil to saturate the plants roots.

We recommend checking your soil to see how dry (or wet) it is, It’s good idea that every gardener have a moisture meter in their tool box and a rain gauge in the garden.
Moisture meters are a quick way to tell the moisture levels in the soil and what areas you may need to water more, or even less, with the moisture meter probe, you can reach further down into the soil and to get a good reading. We have a few varieties available to choose from at both our store locations.

One area of your garden may be dry while a few steps away may be overly wet. If your soil is too dry you will need to supplement water at least a few times a week if not more depending on the plants needs.
That can be either hand watering, sprinkler, soaker hose etc…
Rain gauges are perfect for measuring rain fall or even how much water your sprinkler or irrigation systems put out. Especially for lawns, sometimes there may be a dry spot in the lawn and that might mean that your irrigation system or sprinkler is not hitting that spot and watering it enough. We have a rain gauge made specifically for placing on the lawn to measure the water output amounts.
